Nick Cave

Finding information for Nick Cave the visual artist was a little difficult because there just so happens to be a far more popular musician by the name of Nick Cave as well. But with a bit of searching, I was able to find the works of Nick Cave the performance artist/sculptor. Instantly, I was drawn to his work- this is exactly the kind of work I'm interested in.

Cave is a sculptor as well as a performance artist. He combines these two subjects in his work, creating sculptural suits that can be worn and performed with. His "Soundsuit" series uses bright fabric and fur as well as lots of found objects. Texture and color are some of the prominent elements of art in his work.  Cave's suits transform the human body into a trippy and whimsical creation.

Cave isn't a puppeteer, but his work reminds me of puppetry that I would like to experiment with. So far, I have been creating cute plush Muppet-esque puppets, but I'd love to try and create more detailed and weird puppets on a larger scale.

Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley is a New York City-based portrait artist whose main focus of work is on depicting black people in leafy natural environments. Wiley challenges the stereotypes of black masculinity in America by creating vibrant, natural environments for his subjects to be seen in. Wiley is best known for his painting done of former president Barack Obama, who commissioned the piece to be his presidential portrait.

Jan Van Eyck

            Jan Van Eyck was a Netherlandish painter who immersed himself in studying the techniques of oil painting. He lived from 1390 c to July 1441. During his life, he lived in Belgium and mastered the ways of oil paints. He was mainly focused on religious pictures and portraits of people, but was also known for his use of symbolism. In his painting Arnolfini Portrait , a woman and her husband are seen in their bedroom with a little dog. At first glance, it seems like an average portrait, but if closer inspected, small and incredible details are hidden throughout the piece. An example of this is the mirror on the wall of the room- if looked at closely, the viewer can see the reflection of the husband, wife, and Jan Van Eyck himself.
