Independent Studio- 7

In Independent Studio, I have been taking a step back now that the stress of college applications and portfolios is over, and allowing myself to experiment with new concepts and playing around with my art style. I am trying to allow myself to get looser when it comes to figure drawing and painting and pushing my ideas and concepts further to create new pieces that are unlike anything I've done before. Working 3D is a relatively new thing to me, and I have been enjoying it greatly. I'm currently working on a little cool-down painting for the art show, but after that I want to start something more ambitious, like mixing video editing and 3D art together to make an installation piece. I'm also waiting to see what the plans are for Art Portfolio so I can manage my time and ideas when it comes to the installation concept. I'd want to do something focusing on the human consciousness and our inner psyche and morals. I love creating abstract and experimental pieces about human morality and bringing that into a 3D installation would be amazing.

Emilie Steele is a 3D artist from Stockholm, Sweden who specializes in dollmaking. Her dolls are all handmade individually from clay, and then silicon molds are made and later casted in resin. All the clothes, wigs, and accessories are handmade as well. Steele's dolls are very unique, as each one is made individually and carefully. They're very grotesque and odd, having scarily realistic faces often seen with bloodshot eyes and a solemn expression. Despite the creepiness to it all, these dolls are beautiful works of art that immediately caught my eye. I'm interested in dollmaking, and these unique creations are unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Jan Van Eyck

            Jan Van Eyck was a Netherlandish painter who immersed himself in studying the techniques of oil painting. He lived from 1390 c to July 1441. During his life, he lived in Belgium and mastered the ways of oil paints. He was mainly focused on religious pictures and portraits of people, but was also known for his use of symbolism. In his painting Arnolfini Portrait , a woman and her husband are seen in their bedroom with a little dog. At first glance, it seems like an average portrait, but if closer inspected, small and incredible details are hidden throughout the piece. An example of this is the mirror on the wall of the room- if looked at closely, the viewer can see the reflection of the husband, wife, and Jan Van Eyck himself.
