Independent Studio- 6

This week and the week before, I put most of my focus into my college portfolio. I carefully selected works I felt best represented my skills and what I would want an admissions committee to see. I selected a balance of both personal work and technical assignments.


I submitted these portfolios to both MassArt and Lesley University and was careful to include a variety of medias ranging from digital work, 3D work, and traditional 2D work. I am proud of my portfolio and excited to see the results I get from colleges.

Emilie Steele is a 3D artist from Stockholm, Sweden who specializes in dollmaking. Her dolls are all handmade individually from clay, and then silicon molds are made and later casted in resin. All the clothes, wigs, and accessories are handmade as well. Steele's dolls are very unique, as each one is made individually and carefully. They're very grotesque and odd, having scarily realistic faces often seen with bloodshot eyes and a solemn expression. Despite the creepiness to it all, these dolls are beautiful works of art that immediately caught my eye. I'm interested in dollmaking, and these unique creations are unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley is a New York City-based portrait artist whose main focus of work is on depicting black people in leafy natural environments. Wiley challenges the stereotypes of black masculinity in America by creating vibrant, natural environments for his subjects to be seen in. Wiley is best known for his painting done of former president Barack Obama, who commissioned the piece to be his presidential portrait.

Jan Van Eyck

            Jan Van Eyck was a Netherlandish painter who immersed himself in studying the techniques of oil painting. He lived from 1390 c to July 1441. During his life, he lived in Belgium and mastered the ways of oil paints. He was mainly focused on religious pictures and portraits of people, but was also known for his use of symbolism. In his painting Arnolfini Portrait , a woman and her husband are seen in their bedroom with a little dog. At first glance, it seems like an average portrait, but if closer inspected, small and incredible details are hidden throughout the piece. An example of this is the mirror on the wall of the room- if looked at closely, the viewer can see the reflection of the husband, wife, and Jan Van Eyck himself.
