Maps in Artwork

Matthew Cusick uses maps to create stunning portraits. He uses different colors and shades of maps and proceeds to cut them apart and paste together bits to create the effect of shadow and light. His images have a sort of sketchy look to them because of all the condensed bits of shredded maps he uses.



Elisabeth Lecourt creates clothing inspired with maps and takes photographs of them. They are made from folded and cut maps.




Shannon Rankin uses small cut disks of maps to create large patterns and design. She uses different colors and sizes and arrangements of disks to create intricate patters usually shown on a large scale.

Despite the creepiness to it all, these dolls are beautiful works of art that immediately caught my eye. I'm interested in dollmaking, and these unique creations are unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley is a New York City-based portrait artist whose main focus of work is on depicting black people in leafy natural environments. Wiley challenges the stereotypes of black masculinity in America by creating vibrant, natural environments for his subjects to be seen in. Wiley is best known for his painting done of former president Barack Obama, who commissioned the piece to be his presidential portrait.

Jan Van Eyck

            Jan Van Eyck was a Netherlandish painter who immersed himself in studying the techniques of oil painting. He lived from 1390 c to July 1441. During his life, he lived in Belgium and mastered the ways of oil paints. He was mainly focused on religious pictures and portraits of people, but was also known for his use of symbolism. In his painting Arnolfini Portrait , a woman and her husband are seen in their bedroom with a little dog. At first glance, it seems like an average portrait, but if closer inspected, small and incredible details are hidden throughout the piece. An example of this is the mirror on the wall of the room- if looked at closely, the viewer can see the reflection of the husband, wife, and Jan Van Eyck himself.
