Banksy

Banksy is a modern graffiti artist known best for his work displaying social commentary and challenging political ideas. If I'm being entirely honest, I'm not Banksy's biggest fan. While I agree with the points he makes, graffiti isn't going to do anything to help the current situation. What really helps is going to protests, calling your representatives, and donating to organizations fighting for the rights of marginalized people. I got way off topic here, but that's my two cents on Banksy. His social commentary work, in my opinion, is repetitive and boring and does nothing to actually help things he's making a statement about.





Recently, Banksy created a painting that would run itself through a paper shredder if it were to be sold, which it did. First hearing about this, I laughed. I'm not his biggest fan, but that was definitely a hilarious move. But as I dwell on it more, it seems more like a moneymaking sham than a statement. If Banksy was trying to make a statement about selling art, then he really goofed it here, because now this picture is gonna be worth even more because of all the attention brought to this event.

Kehinde Wiley is a New York City-based portrait artist whose main focus of work is on depicting black people in leafy natural environments. Wiley challenges the stereotypes of black masculinity in America by creating vibrant, natural environments for his subjects to be seen in. Wiley is best known for his painting done of former president Barack Obama, who commissioned the piece to be his presidential portrait.

Jan Van Eyck

            Jan Van Eyck was a Netherlandish painter who immersed himself in studying the techniques of oil painting. He lived from 1390 c to July 1441. During his life, he lived in Belgium and mastered the ways of oil paints. He was mainly focused on religious pictures and portraits of people, but was also known for his use of symbolism. In his painting Arnolfini Portrait , a woman and her husband are seen in their bedroom with a little dog. At first glance, it seems like an average portrait, but if closer inspected, small and incredible details are hidden throughout the piece. An example of this is the mirror on the wall of the room- if looked at closely, the viewer can see the reflection of the husband, wife, and Jan Van Eyck himself.
