Marcel Duchamp

Image
Marcel Duchamp was a French-American artist, most known for his paintings and sculpture.  Other passions Duchamp had included filmography, playing chess, and writing.  His paintings are very loose and shape-oriented, most of his pieces being made up of shapes. He often uses warm colors such as yellows, reds, and oranges in them. He was known for creating pieces dubbed "readymades", which were sculptures that Duchamp would make from an ordinary object and add to it until he considered said object art. One of the most noticeable examples of a readymade is the Bicycle Wheel, which consists of a front wheel of a bicycle being mounted upon a wooden stool. He called this style "retinal art", his intent being to please the eye.

Fauvism is a painting style that started in the 20th century and focused on using vivid colors and expressive brush strokes. Leaders of the fauvism movement included Albert Marquet, Henry Matisse, and Georges Rouault. They were inspired by artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Georges Seurat. They emphasized their emotional state through their art, putting lots of feeling and color into their pieces.
